NEW DELHI: Two unidentified individuals allegedly stole 6.5kg of gold ornaments valued at nearly Rs 7 crore from a jewellery shop near Thane railway station, police said on Wednesday.

The robbery occurred between 1.30am and 4.00am on Tuesday. The suspects broke the lock of the staircase door leading to the first floor of the establishment and forced open the shutter to access the displayed jewellery, Naupada police officials confirmed.

An official revealed that the store lacked standard security measures. Unlike most jewellers who secure valuables in safes overnight, the ornaments were left on display, significantly easing the execution of the heist.

“This unusual lapse in security allowed the thieves to carry out the robbery quickly and effectively,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

The Naupada police have registered a case and formed multiple teams to track down the culprits and recover the stolen gold.

Authorities are scrutinizing CCTV footage, questioning locals, and analyzing forensic evidence to identify the perpetrators.

"Our teams are pursuing all possible leads and gathering evidence to crack this case," a police official said.
