THIRUVANTHANAM: A Latin Archdiocese circular read out Sunday in Kerala’s churches condemned what it called as an increase in attacks on minorities in the country, especially Christians, and attempts to create “communal divisions”.
The circular issued by Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop Thomas J Netto, also calls for a fast on March 22 for “unity and peace”. It assumed significance as it came a day after the Lok Sabha poll dates were declared and amid BJP’s efforts to woo Christians in the Left-governed state where the saffron party drew a blank in the 2019 election. By contrast, the Left government, which had strained ties with Latin Archdiocese following protests over the Vizhinjam port project, withdrew cases against most agitating fisherfolk last week in an apparent placatory act.
According to Sunday’s circular, democracy is facing a threat as divisive attitudes and hate speeches undermine the pluralistic ethos of the country, its Constitution, fundamental rights and minority rights. Attacks on minorities, especially Christians, went up from 147 in 2014 to 687 in 2023, the circular says.
In the wake of the situation, Latin Archdiocese will observe “A fast prayer day’’on Friday by sacrificing one meal and observing an hour of prayer in the churches, the circular adds.
