CDS to host KN Raj’s centenary celebrations
Thiruvananthapuram: The Centre for Development Studies is set to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of its founder, Dr K N Raj. The centenary celebrations will be held from Saturday to Tuesday.The highlight of the event will be the K N Raj Centenary Conference, scheduled from Sunday to Tuesday. It will be inaugurated by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday. The CM will also launch a souvenir commemorating K N Raj's contribution to the country's economic development. The inaugural session will be chaired by Sudipo Mundle, chairman of CDS, and C Veeramani, RBI chair and director of CDS.The first session will have three talks. Suraj Jacob will speak on Raj's humanist vision and grounded theorising, K P Kannan will speak on Raj's life, and Sanjay Baru will speak on Raj's work in the political economy of governance.The conference proceedings on Monday will commence with a session chaired by Gita Sen and a keynote address by Pranab Bardhan, professor emeritus of Economics at the University of California, on the theme of empowering workers in a world of inequality. The remaining academic sessions of the event on Monday and Tuesday will feature economists, scholars, policymakers, and CDS alumni discussing topics closely aligned with Raj's research interests, such as gender and labour market inequalities, the rural economy, trade, industrial growth, public finance and macroeconomy, and decentralization and governance.The centenary celebrations will begin with a homecoming of CDS alumni from around the world on Saturday and Sunday. An alumni association will be formed to strengthen the ties between CDS alumni and the institute. Apart from this, the CDS faculties will be delivering K N Raj Memorial Lectures across different universities and colleges in the state.
