‘Classrooms should become spaces of healthy dialogue’

T'puram: Kerala must nurture a socially conscious and vigilant community capable of protesting against and preventing violence directed at children, said chairperson of Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights K V Manojkumar. He inaugurated a three-day conclave on child protection laws organized by the commission in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday.Addressing the gathering, Manojkumar stressed the need for Kerala society to evolve into one that acts with discernment and responsibility. "If children are filled with fear, they cannot grow freely. Classrooms should become spaces of healthy dialogue, critical thinking, joy and happiness," he said, adding that the goal should be to nurture children with a strong scientific temper and sound moral values from a young age.
He pointed out that many children who come to schools carry multiple personal and social challenges and teachers play a crucial role in shaping their lives. "Observation skills and self-respect must be fostered among children. They should grow up happy and confident. Those entrusted with the duty of protecting children's rights have greater responsibilities," Manojkumar said. Teachers, he added, should guide children beyond mere academic knowledge towards humanity and compassion. The programme, held at Kerala Bank Auditorium at PMG Junction, was presided over by panel member K Mohankumar. The conclave reviewed key child-centric legislation, including Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and Pocso Act.
