THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district administration is all set to launch the third phase of Project X, an initiative to spread comprehensive sexuality education, in view of International Women's Day which falls on Friday.
Project X is an initiative launched last year by the Thiruvananthapuram district administration and general education department in collaboration with Kanal, a social organisation.
It is the first-ever comprehensive sexuality education campaign implemented in Kerala.
"The project's main objective is to advance comprehensive sexuality education to individuals in a scientific, age-appropriate, feminist, right-based and evidence-based manner," said district collector Geromic George.
Project X has completed the first phase of fostering comprehensive sexuality education training among 5,530 adolescents studying in 50 selected schools from the district.
Project X involves a two-hour session for students from each school. It stands out for its unique approach to addressing the unmet needs of students and parents.
Unlike most programmes that limit sex education to biological aspects, Project X aims to provide a broader perspective on human sexuality.
"Based on the many impactful feedback received from students, the project's second phase is proceeding currently in training upper and lower primary school teachers from 100 schools in the district. The team is also working on introducing Phase III of Project X to all the students studying in high school and higher secondary schools all over the district," the collector said.
"Project X's ultimate goal is to expand the delivery of comprehensive sexuality education in Kerala as a whole, so we are anticipating the scaling up and the expansion of this project X to new areas and expecting all the means of collaborative support," district collector Geromic George added.
