Thiruvananthapuram: Fifteen out of the 21 people who died of rabies in the state did not receive proper anti-rabies treatment, said a committee appointed to find out the reasons behind the rabies deaths in the state. The remaining six people died due to the deep nature of wounds, it said.
The committee headed by Dr Thomas Mathew, director of medical education, submitted the report to the health minister on Wednesday. The report said in the six deaths, the dog bites were so deep to damage the nerves. The victims were bitten on places where the concentration of nerves is high such as face, lips, ear, eyelids, neck and palm. Hence, the spread of rabies was spontaneous, the report said.
In the case of the other 15 people, they ignored the dog bite and did not go for anti-rabies treatment. The report said that the details were collected by interacting with the family members and doctors. The vaccines' quality and immunoglobulin were tested in central laboratories, which did not find any fault with them. The presence of antibodies in those who had taken the vaccination was also high, according to tests conducted at Nimhans in Bangalore.
