1033 sadhaya vizha of Raja Raja Cholan celebrated

Trichy: The 1033rd sadhaya vizha, the birth anniversary of King Raja Raja Cholan who built the Big Temple, was celebrated on the temple premises in Thanjavur on Saturday. To mark the occasion, an abishekam was performed on the statue of the king. ‘Thirumarai Thiruveethiyula’ (procession) was also conducted in the city.

District collector A Annathurai, district superintendent of police Thanjavur T Senthilkumar, senior prince Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, political leaders and functionaries of various Tamil outfits garlanded the statue of King Raja Raja Cholan, which was illuminated and decorated with flowers.

Various arts and cultural events have also been organised in the evening. A large number of people gathered at the temple to participate in the event.

Earlier on Friday, the district collector inaugurated the two-day festival organised by the Hindu religious and charitable endowments department and the Thanjavur Palace Devasthanam. While addressing the event Annathurai glorified the king for rendering the Big Temple to the world. His name and fame would ever remain in the world, he said.

The events on the first day were commenced with traditional music by T K S Padhmanaban. Seminars on various topics and cultural programmes were also organised as part of the festival on Friday.

Senior prince Babaji Rajah Bhonsle, sadhaya vizha committee chairman Durai Thirugnanam, Tamil University vice-chancellor Balasubramaniam, joint commissioner of HR and CE K Thennarasu were among those who participated in the events.
