Corpn floats tender for Thiruverumbur bus terminus

Trichy: Trichy corporation has sanctioned Rs 6.2 crore for a new satellite bus terminus near Trichy-Thanjavur National Highway at Thiruverumbur. It has floated a tender to identify a suitable contractor so that the construction work can begin before the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the assembly election next year.Sources said the corporation already paid a sum of Rs 2.5 crore to the district administration for about one acre of land for the project on the campus of the Thiruverumbur old panchayat union office. The project, which is the fifth bus terminus project in the city and the second satellite bus terminus after Srirangam, will include development of bus bays and a commercial complex.At present, buses operate from bays on the narrow service roads of Trichy-Thanjavur NH passing through Thiruverumbur. Without a dedicated terminus, the accident-prone highway connecting delta districts often faces traffic congestion. The terminus will serve five new wards of Trichy and villages surrounding Thiruverumbur. "Once the terminus is ready, a substantial area will be freed up for vehicles on the highway. Some of the mofussil buses will be operated through the terminus," said an official. About 500 daily bus services are operated between Trichy (Panjapur KKBT) and Thanjavur-Velankanni via Thiruverumbur.
