Railway Protection Force seizes Rs 75 lakh unaccounted cash from passenger in Howrah Express at Trichy

TRICHY: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) confiscated unaccounted currency amounting to Rs 75 lakh from a traveller aboard the Howrah Express at the Trichy railway junction in the early hours of Saturday.

The RPF team caught the passenger, V Arockiadass, 49, a resident of Devakottai in Sivagangai district, with the cash during their routine check on the Kolkata-Trichy Howrah Express Train at Trichy railway junction early this morning.

RPF sub-inspector KP Sebastian said today that an RPF constable grew suspicious of Arockiadass and checked his bag, in which he found bundles of cash.

During the interrogation, the passenger claimed that the bag contained Rs 50 lakh cash. The counting revealed that Rs 75 lakh in Rs 500 denomination was kept in the bag.

The passenger claimed that he travelled in an unreserved compartment of the train from Chennai to reach Trichy. The cash was intended to be delivered to a person in Karaikudi in Sivagangai district.

The traveller is presently being interrogated by the Income Tax (IT) department.
