Training programme on identifying disabilities in children
Trichy: A one-day training programme on early identification of disabilities in children was inaugurated by Trichy district collector, M Pradeep Kumar on Friday. The participants were given training on the early detection of disabilities in children under the age of six years, providing training to disabled children and referring children identified at an early stage to experts in the field for therapies. Speaking to TOI, director of Spastics Society of Trichy, Santhakumar said: "We are focusing on three major aspects, early identification, prevention and intervention. If the disability is identified in early stage and given immediate intervention, we can reduce the intensity, but full recovery is not possible in cases related to neurological disorders. We have also given an assessment kit to village health nurses which helps them to check auditory tactile stimulation, identify 21 kinds of disabilities and it also has a chart which explains about early intervention."The programme was also attended by experts from the National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (NIEPID). The experts elaborated about the importance of training and the role of anganwadi workers, village health nurses and samagra shiksha abhiyan (SSA) workers in early detection of disabled children. The Spastics Society of Trichy along with the district differently-abled welfare office (DDAWO) organised the programme at the collectorate. The event was held as a part of the national-level training programme on early intervention of disabilities in children.
