When Williams Road turns into parking lot

Trichy: It may not be an exaggeration if one says that the number of vehicles parked on Williams Road in Trichy is more than those plying on the same stretch. The unauthorised parking is virtually choking the arterial road. As Williams Road connects a couple of TNSTC depots with Central bus stand, cars parked outside the commercial establishments including hotels and beverage stalls causes frequent snarl-ups sparking altercation among the commuters.

Since TNSTC’s Cantonment depot and mofussil depot are located on the road, close to 200 buses access Williams Road every day. As the road is only 20feet wide, TNSTC drivers said that they face difficulty in steering the buses through the 250-metre road. "Cars are haphazardly parked on either sides of the road. People casually park cars on the road, and leisurely dine in the hotels," M Selvakumar, a TNSTC driver, said. Buses from both the depots had to pass through the narrow stretch to start their routine services from the Central bus stand.

"We hardly find policemen supervising traffic in the stretch where unauthorised parking affects traffic flow. Commercial establishments should advise their customers not to park their cars affecting the traffic," said P Aiyarappan, representative of Legal Awareness and Anti-Corruption Organisation (LAACO).

Adding to the woes is an autorickshaw stand in the corner of the Williams Road. Sources in traffic police wing promised to install ‘no parking’ boards wherever necessary to streamline the traffic on the road.
