K Parvathi, from Esanya Street in Sirkazhi met with the painful incident when she had gone to an urban primary health centre (PHC) to get treatment for fever on November 9.

The needle broke when a senior staff nurse administered an injection on her right hip. Acting on the advice from the nurse and the doctors, the woman went to the government hospital in Nagappattinam.

Block medical officer (BMO) Dr Raj Mohan said the woman was referred to the government hospital by the doctors. “The nurse is experienced. Such incidents may happen due to the jerk by the patients. The syringe needle may be inferior,” he told TOI. The doctors in government hospital in Nagappattinam performed X- ray but they failed to notice the needle in the X-ray film and sent the woman back home. Sources said that as the needle remained in the body, and Parvathi developed pain in few days and visited the hospital to check.

On the contrary, BMO Dr Rajmohan claimed that the doctors in the government hospital at Nagappattinam magnified the image and confirmed the presence of needle and asked the woman to visit the hospital in few days.

“The doctors tried to remove the needle from the body, but it moved deeper unable to take it out with the available facilities there,” said Dr Raj Mohan.

The doctors referred her to Rajah Muthaiah medical college and hospital in Chidambaram in

Cuddalore district

to undergo the procedure. But the woman returned home and bore the pain due to her financial constraints to visit Chidambaram. The issue came to light on Friday, through local people and gained the attention of media after which Sirkazhi AIADMK MLA PV Bharathi intervened and instructed the doctors to take the woman to the government medical college hospital in Tiruvarur.

“The procedure will be done tonight (Friday) or tomorrow morning to remove the needle. I will enquire about the quality of the needle and as to why the government hospital doctors failed to notice the the needle in the x-ray in the first instance,” MLA Bharathi told ToI.

Dr Raj Mohan said that the procedure can be done with the assistance of C-arm equipment which is available at Tiruvarur government medical college hospital. Repeated attempts to contact deputy director of health services (DDHS) Dr V Subramanian, Nagappattinam district to check if he had initiated any action to find out the quality of the syringe supplied to the PHCs in the district, went in vain. Several calls to contact him went unanswered.
