Girl raped, attacked with sword in Banswara; main accused held

Udaipur: Banswara police on Tuesday arrested a person for raping and attempting to murder a 19-year-old girl. Police said when the girl protested the accused attacked her with a sword. According to police, the main accused Kaluram (23), a resident of Kanpuri under Khajuri police, was arrested, while involvement of another accused is under investigation. The girl was raped on Sunday night in Danpur police station area of Banswara district while she was returning home from a wedding ceremony at her relative's place, which was about 500 metre away from her home. The accused Kalu and his accomplice Jeetu stopped her. Kalu had been pursuing her to marry him but was refused. On Sunday night he stopped her to seek a reason for refusal. However, the girl tried to avoid him and refused to respond, but when she protested his advances, he raped her. However, when the girl tried to run to save herself, Kalu lashed multiple attacks on her with a sword. He attacked her on the head and in a bid to save herself, her fingers were also severed. Meanwhile, her brother told police that he was standing outside the wedding house when he heard his sister screaming. He found his sister lying in a pool of blood. She was taken to the nearby health centre. From there she was referred to Banswara and then to Udaipur due to her critical condition. Police said the girl received 18 stitches on her head, 7 on her mouth and 6 on her palm. The main accused Kalu was pressuring her to marry him. DSP Suryaveer Singh, the investigating officer said, the statements of the victim have been recorded before the magistrate.
