NEW DELHI: A clash erupted Monday night between two factions of Udaipur's royal family outside the City Palace, prompting police intervention. The dispute stemmed from the recent coronation of BJP MLA Vishvaraj Singh Mewar as the 77th Maharana of Mewar.
Vishvaraj Singh Mewar and his supporters were denied entry into the City Palace, leading to a standoff with his cousin, Dr. Lakshay Raj Singh Mewar and uncle, Arvind Singh Mewar.
Supporters of Vishvaraj Singh Mewar then began throwing stones at the palace and those inside retaliated.
District collector Arvind Kumar Poswal has assured the public that the situation is now under control.
“The law and order situation is well under control. Talks were going on with palace representatives as well as the society representatives. We have agreed on certain issues, while talks are still going on for certain others," Poswal said.
The district administration has taken control of the Dhuni Mata Temple, the site of the dispute. Poswal added, “The district administration has moved to take the disputed site of Dhuni Mata Temple into receivership. If either of the two groups wants to register a case, it will be registered.”
The administration will allow either group to file charges if they choose.
