‘Eco-tourism homestays’ flavour World Tourism Day

Times News NetworkVadodara: Models prepared by students to mark the World Tourism Day were displayed at MS University’s department of family and community resource management of faculty of family and community sciences on the campus on Wednesday. Students had prepared 2D cut-outs and frames as well as 3D models on various monuments and famous lakes of the country. Representing various states of the country, the students had also prepared floor decoration while the senior students of MSc programme had prepared a model on eco-tourism homestay. “The purpose of celebrating World Tourism Day was to spread awareness about the importance of tourism among the global community and its impact on social, cultural, political and economic value of the nation,” said Dr Sarjoo Patel, convener and assistant professor at the department. “The day served as an opportunity to highlight the significance of tourism in generating income, creating jobs and supporting local communities, as well as encouraging responsible and sustainable tourism practices. So overall it contributes in reaching sustainable development goals,” she said.

10-fold growth in revenue, footfall from eco-tourism

The eco-tourism sites in Odisha have seen a 10-fold increase in footfall and revenue since 2016. The sites, managed by local communities, have witnessed a rise in both domestic and international tourists. Foreign tourists from 22 countries visited the sites in 2023, compared to 19 in 2021. The Debrigarh wildlife sanctuary is the most popular destination, followed by Similipals and Mahanad wildlife divisions Badmul sands resort. The success of nature tourism has empowered local communities and reduced dependence on forests.

City tour organised for students to mark World Tourism Day

The tourism department and cultural council organized a trip for members of the young tourism club and students in Kanpur. The bus journeyed through various landmarks and ended at Bithoor. The district magistrate highlighted the importance of World Tourism Day in promoting cultural understanding and economic development. In other news, a 17-year-old student in Narasaropet committed suicide due to family issues, emphasizing the need for addressing mental health among students. Additionally, the Friends of Rajasthan Tourism group organized a cycling tour in Jaipur to promote the city's heritage and tourism opportunities.
