VARANASI: A 15-year-old Dalit girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire at a village in

district on Wednesday night. A suicide note was also found in her house.

The police arrested five teenage boys of the same village in this connection and booked them under section 306 of IPC for abetment to suicide.

However, the girl's mother alleged that her daughter was set afire by the five boys when she was alone in the home. She said the girl had been stalked and harassed by these boys. The victim,Sonam, was the daughter of a labourer and studied in class VIII at a junior high school. Her father

According to her mother, Sonam was very upset when she returned after appearing in examination. She added that they had been stalking her for quite sometime and threatening her and her family of dire consequences. The police were also informed about the matter, but no action was taken, she alleged. The girl was taken to hospital, where she succumbed to burn injuries during treatment.

However, the police claimed it to be a case of suicide.

told TOI over phone that in her suicide note, the girl sought action against those who wanted to cause trouble to her family members.

An FIR was lodged against five persons and all of them were arrested, said the SO adding that it was not the case of sexual harassment or burning.
