Cancer instt records rise in patient load
Varanasi: The annual patient registrations at Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya Cancer Centre (MPMMCC) and Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital (HBCH) has increased significantly from 6,307 in 2018 to 27,731 in 2025.According to records, total patient registrations since inception have reached 1,54,836. During this period, the institute performed 83,372 surgeries, provided radiotherapy to 19,706 patients and administered 5,53,377 cycles of chemotherapy, reflecting the scale and comprehensiveness of oncology services.
Prof Satyajit Pradhan, the director of MPMMCC and HBCH, said that the institute strengthened community- and hospital-based screening for oral, breast and cervical cancers as part of its preventive oncology efforts. In 2025, more than 5,000 people were screened through outreach camps and routine clinical services. The institute is also working to implement a comprehensive Oral Cancer Elimination Demonstration Programme in collaboration with the district administration, along with awareness initiatives through structured school education programmes in govt and private schools. He said the institute achieved a major milestone by becoming the first hospital in eastern Uttar Pradesh to introduce robotic surgery for cancer treatment. In 2025, it added advanced technologies including two linear accelerators, one robotic surgery unit and a CT scan machine through CSR support, helping speed up diagnostics and reduce waiting time.Strengthening its academic portfolio, the institute received approval from the National Medical Commission to start an MD programme in Radiodiagnosis last year. It also secured permission from the National Board of Examinations to launch a DNB course in Palliative Medicine, reinforcing its focus on specialised oncology education and training.Marking its 7th Foundation Day, the institute on Saturday organised a two-day event beginning with a Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference, followed by cultural performances.
