Heavy rains lashed different parts of Telangana on Wednesday due to the impact of severe cyclonic storm 'Montha', which crossed the coast in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh overnight. One person died and another was feared washed away in separate rain-related incidents.

In Telangana, Warangal, Jangaon, Hanumakonda, Mahabubabad, Karimnagar, Siddipet, Rajanna Sircilla, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Khammam, Nagarkurnool, Peddapalli, Bhadradri Kothagudem, were among the districts that witnessed downpour, with rain lashing Hyderabad also.

Bheemadevarapalle in Hanumakonda district received 412.3 mm rainfall, followed by Kalleda 382.3 mm, Urus 336.8 mm and Redlawada 333.3 mm in Warangal district, from 8.30 AM to 9 PM, the Telangana Development Planning Society said.


The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Warangal, Hanumakonda, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rajanna Sircilla and Karimnagar districts for Wednesday, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) very likely to occur at isolated places in these districts.

A red alert indicates extremely heavy rain of over 20 cm in 24 hours.

On impact of cyclone 'Montha', Odisha Chief Fire Officer Ramesh Chandra Majhi said, "Following the cyclone, Odisha Fire and Emergency Services Department received a total of 50 reports related to road clearance and fallen trees across various districts. In Ganjam, teams cleared fallen trees at nine locations, while in Gajapati, they attended to 15 such incidents. In Kandhamal, 3 locations were cleared, and in Koraput, teams cleared 14 locations. Additionally, 2 locations in Malkangiri and 7 in Rayagada were cleared. In Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Berhampur, waterlogged areas were drained. The department successfully managed to maintain zero casualties as per the Chief Minister's directive, with 123 teams on alert and actively working in affected areas. The overall situation is now normal with no further risk of heavy rain or strong winds... The only significant incident was a landslide in Gajapati which completely blocked a road, and a minor landslide in Malkangiri..."

Two died due to cyclone; precautionary measures minimised losses: Andhra CM

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu said two persons died in the state due to the severe cyclonic storm 'Montha'. and noted that precautionary measure had "minimised the loss."

Naidu called on the entire government machinery to continue their efforts for another two days to provide further relief to cyclone-affected people.

"If we work in the same way for another two days, we can give much relief to people. Due to the cyclone, two persons died," Naidu said in a release.

He directed officials to restore normalcy at the earliest and instructed ministers and senior officials to visit affected areas and address people's grievances.

The CM also asked departments to assess the damage caused by the cyclone and furnish details to the union government.

He further ordered the distribution of essential supplies to affected families and appreciated the efforts of the SDRF, police, and fire service personnel in clearing uprooted trees and snapped power lines "on a war footing".

To restore damaged power infrastructure, the CM said 10,000 personnel were kept on standby, adding that power supply would be normalised by this afternoon.

Cyclone 'Montha': CM Revanth Reddy puts administration on high alert

Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed the entire state administration to remain on high alert following heavy rains triggered by Cyclone 'Montha'.

Reviewing the cyclone's impact, particularly on paddy harvesting, he instructed the authorities to take necessary precautions to minimise losses, an official release said.

He ordered special arrangements at paddy and cotton procurement centres.

The IMD Director in Bhubaneswar said that Gajapati district reported the highest maximum rainfall of 150.5 millimetres, with isolated heavy rain forecast for the next 24 hours. She further mentioned that rainfall is likely across the state, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The Andhra Pradesh government has announced the suspension of vehicular movement in seven cyclone-affected districts from 8.30 pm to 6:00 am Wednesday, as Cyclone Montha intensifies near the coast.

Between 8.30 am and 4 pm, Ulavapadu recorded 12.6 cm, followed by Kavali (12.2 cm), Dagadarthi (12 cm), Singarayakonda (10.5 cm), B Kodur (6 cm), while Visakhapatnam and Tuni received 2 cm each.

Heavy showers have also been reported in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, and Anakapalli districts in the past few hours.

“It is estimated that the cyclone could cross the coast by 11.30 pm,” the CMO said, as quoted by PTI, cautioning that intense rainfall is likely between 9 pm and early Wednesday.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that the cyclone has damaged standing crops over 38,000 hectares and horticulture crops across 1.38 lakh hectares in various parts of the state.

The severe cyclonic storm, expected to make landfall south of Kakinada tonight, has affected large areas across coastal and adjoining districts.

"Most of these trains operate between the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada sections, which are likely to experience the impact of the cyclone. Therefore, services on those routes have been cancelled. Particularly, trains starting from south Indian cities such as Bengaluru and Chennai towards Howrah and Assam, as well as some trains bound for Secunderabad, have either been cancelled or rescheduled. In view of the Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) Montha, more than 35 flights between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been cancelled, GMR Airports said.

A total of 30 IndiGo, two Air India, and five Air India Express flights operating between Shamshabad (Telangana) and Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Rajahmundry airports in Andhra Pradesh have been grounded as a precaution, reported ANI.

Cyclone Montha Live: IMD says landfall expected along Kakinada coast; issues no. 10 red warning

• The Deputy Director of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre (IMD) said that Cyclone Montha is expected to make landfall along the Kakinada coast.
• The IMD has issued a number 10 red warning for Kakinada port, while Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, and Machilipatnam ports have been placed under a number 9 warning.
