VIJAYAWADA: CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy made it clear on Tuesday that Visakhapatnam would become the capital of Andhra Pradesh in coming months, ending ambiguity on the issue. This is the first time that he has made a mention of the capital in his last three years in office. He had been calling Visakhapatnam the executive capital. This time he used the word “capital”, and not “executive capital”.

Speaking at the global investors’ conference in Delhi on Tuesday, he invited investors to the state. He asked them to come to Visakhapatnam where the global investment summit is planned for two days in March. “I myself would be shifting over (sic) to Visakhapatnam in coming months as well,” he said.
Visakhapatnam: Discover the vibrant capital of Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said the state capital will be shifted to Visakhapatnam.

"Here I am to invite you to Visakhapatnam which is going to be our capital in the days to come," Jagan said at the summit.

In November 2022, Jagan government repealed the controversial AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Act, 2020 intended to establish three capitals for the state.

Visakhapatnam-Executive Capital, Amaravati-Legislative capital and Kurnool-Judicial capital: Jagan govt had passed an appropriate legislation.

In March last year, the Andhra HC ruled against the three capitals and directed the government to develop Amaravati as the state capital as envisaged.

TTD chairman YV Subba Reddy says govt will start functioning from Visakhapatnam before April this year. Several government offices will start functioning from Vizag.

N Chandrababu Naidu-led government in 2015 acquired over 33,000 acres of land from farmers to develop Amaravati as the capital of the state. Amaravati is the present capital of Andhra Pradesh.

His statement came at a time when the Supreme Court had listed the hearing of the case on Amaravati as capital. The state government had challenged the judgment of the AP HC, which wanted the state government to develop Amaravati as the capital. The case was scheduled to be heard in SC on Tuesday.

In 2019, Jagan had announced his plan to create three capital cities. While restricting Amaravati, the current de facto capital of AP, to housing the state assembly, he wanted to shift the administration, including the CM’s office, to Visakhapatnam, which he declared “executive capital”. He had proposed Kurnool as “judicial capital”.
