School’s community outreach initiative links sustainability with social inclusion
Delhi Public School (DPS), Sector 45, Gurugram has strengthened its focus on sustainability and social responsibility through its community outreach initiative, Kadam – Soul to Sole. The programme addresses the dual challenges of urban waste management and limited access to basic necessities for underprivileged children.
As part of the initiative, gently used shoes are collected, refurbished and distributed to children from economically weaker sections in Gurugram and nearby areas. The effort helps prevent usable footwear from being discarded while enabling children to attend school with greater comfort and dignity.
The initiative has benefited over 4,200 children to date, contributing to improved school attendance, confidence and overall well-being. It has also fostered environmental awareness, empathy and civic responsibility among students and the wider school community.
Commenting on the programme, DPS Sector 45 Gurugram Director Principal Aditi Misra said the school believes education extends beyond the classroom. She said Kadam – Soul to Sole reflects the institution’s commitment to nurturing compassionate and socially responsible citizens while promoting sustainable practices.
Students play an active role in planning and implementing the initiative, gaining hands-on leadership experience and exposure to community service. The programme aligns with key UN Sustainable Development Goals, including Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, Climate Action and Life on Land, and has been replicated across sister schools and educational networks.
Through Kadam – Soul to Sole, DPS Sector 45 Gurugram continues to demonstrate how small steps can lead to meaningful and lasting change.
