ICAI CA exams postponed in Kathmandu due to Nepal unrest and social media ban; check official notice here
ICAI CA exams 2025: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced the postponement of the Chartered Accountants (CA) examinations scheduled to be held in Kathmandu on September 9 and 10, 2025. The decision was taken in view of the ongoing violent protests in Nepal following the government’s recent ban on multiple social media platforms.
The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the ICAI Examination Department on September 8, 2025. It clarified that the postponement applies only to the examination centre in Kathmandu, Nepal. All other details, including the schedule at centres outside Kathmandu, remain unchanged as per the earlier announcement issued on May 30, 2025.
Protests sparked by social media ban
The unrest in Nepal began after the government imposed a ban on 26 major social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube. The ban was introduced citing tax evasion and cybersecurity concerns. The move triggered widespread protests, particularly among the youth, who viewed it as a restriction on free speech.
The demonstrations, which began on September 8, rapidly escalated into violent clashes across several cities including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Birgunj. According to reports, at least 19 people have been killed and more than 500 injured over the past two days.
Violence results in fatality and political fallout
Among the casualties was Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former Nepali Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. She sustained critical burns after protesters set fire to their residence in Kathmandu. Despite being rushed to Kirtipur Burn Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
The protests also led to the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Demonstrators set fire to multiple government buildings, including the Parliament House and the President’s Office. The Nepali Army has issued public appeals urging demonstrators to exercise restraint and preserve national heritage.
ICAI assures revised dates for postponed exams
The ICAI has assured that revised dates for the postponed CA examinations in Kathmandu will be announced soon. Candidates are advised to monitor the official ICAI website (www.icai.org) for further updates. The institute confirmed that the previously announced examination details remain unchanged for all other centres.
The postponement was communicated via Announcement No. 13-CA (EXAM)/SEPTEMBER/2025/IV, and follows earlier announcements dated May 30, September 2, and September 5, 2025. The institute has emphasised the safety of candidates and staff as the primary reason for this decision.
