Prashant Kishor, widely known as PK, has emerged as one of India’s most influential political strategists. Recently, he announced the formation of his own political party, Jan Suraaj, in Bihar, signalling a transition from behind-the-scenes strategist to active politician. The party is set to contest all 243 seats in the upcoming Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, marking a significant step in Kishor’s career.
Before entering the political arena directly, Kishor spent several years working in public health. His extensive experience in UN-funded programmes for eight years laid the groundwork for his organisational and strategic skills, which would later define his political campaigns.
Early life and educationBorn in Sasaram, Bihar, Kishor hails from the Konar village of Rohtas district. He later moved to Buxar, where he completed his secondary education. His parents, Shrikant Pandey, a physician, and Sushila Pandey, a homemaker, supported his early education. Kishor’s academic foundation and exposure to public health shaped his initial career trajectory before venturing into politics.
From public health to political strategistKishor began his career working in public health programmes funded by the United Nations. This phase lasted until 2011 and gave him experience in planning, programme implementation, and community engagement. He later transitioned into political strategy without holding any formal office in a political party, initially supporting the BJP’s campaign in the 2012 Gujarat Legislative Assembly election.
In 2013, Kishor co-founded Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG), a media and publicity company, to prepare for the 2014 Lok Sabha election. He played a key role in Narendra Modi’s campaign, introducing initiatives such as Chai Pe Charcha discussions, 3D rallies, Run for Unity, and Manthan, alongside social media programmes. The campaign contributed to the BJP winning an absolute majority in the 2014 general election.
Expanding political influence across statesFollowing this success, Kishor worked with several parties across India. He contributed to Nitish Kumar’s Mahagathbandhan victory in Bihar in 2015 and later joined JD(U) as vice-president in 2018. He also assisted the Indian National Congress, Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, Amarinder Singh in Punjab, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, and M.K. Stalin’s DMK.
Retirement and new political journeyAfter the 2021 West Bengal and Tamil Nadu elections, Kishor announced his retirement from political strategy. In 2022, he hinted at launching his own political party and later undertook a 3,000 km padyatra across Bihar. On October 2, 2024, he formally announced the Jan Suraaj Party, marking his official entry into electoral politics while not contesting any seat personally.
