Raghav Chadha education and career: How India’s youngest Rajya Sabha MP went from DU and Chartered Accountancy to shaping the future of politics
Bollywood meets politics in a headline-grabbing twist: Raghav Chadha and Parineeti Chopra tied the knot in September 2023, and the couple recently took to social media to announce that they are expecting their first baby. While this breaking news has everyone talking, Chadha’s journey from an ambitious student in New Delhi to India’s youngest Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament is a story worth understanding.
Born on 11 November 1988 in New Delhi, Raghav Chadha’s early life was marked by academic rigor and curiosity. He received his school education at Modern School, New Delhi, before enrolling at the University of Delhi, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Driven by a desire to combine analytical skills with professional expertise, Chadha pursued Chartered Accountancy from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. He subsequently worked at top accountancy firms including Deloitte and Grant Thornton, sharpening his understanding of finance and governance, tools that would later shape his political career.
Chadha’s political journey began with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from its inception. At the age of 24, he worked under Arvind Kejriwal to draft the Delhi Lokpal Bill in 2012, marking his first foray into legislative work. His articulate presence on television quickly made him the party’s recognizable face, and he became the youngest national spokesperson not just within AAP, but across Indian political parties.
When AAP secured a landslide victory in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections, Chadha, at just 26, was appointed as the party’s national treasurer. He briefly served as an advisor to Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, a tenure later terminated by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs in 2018.
In 2019, Chadha contested the South Delhi Lok Sabha seat. Despite a valiant campaign, he lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Ramesh Bidhuri. Yet, setbacks never slowed him. In 2020, he contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections from Rajendra Nagar, winning with a margin of over 20,000 votes. Following this victory, he was appointed vice-chairman of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), where he focused on clean, 24x7 piped water supply and the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River, leaving a tangible impact on Delhi’s water management systems.
March 2022 marked a historic moment: Chadha was elected to the Rajya Sabha by the Punjab Legislative Assembly, becoming India’s youngest Member of Parliament in the upper house at the age of 33. He was appointed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, overseeing policies drafted by multiple Union ministries and the NITI Aayog. His strategic mind also contributed to AAP’s electoral successes beyond Delhi, including the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, where the party won an overwhelming majority.
Chadha’s influence extends beyond elections. He was appointed co-in-charge for the 2022 Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections and serves as a leader of AAP in the Rajya Sabha. In 2023, when the party’s Floor Leader, Sanjay Singh, was unable to discharge his duties due to judicial custody, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requested that Chadha be appointed interim Leader of the House, a request ultimately turned down due to procedural norms. In Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann appointed him Chairman of an Advisory Panel, a move later upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Chadha’s story exemplifies how a strong educational foundation, professional experience, and political acumen can converge to create a new generation of leaders. From University of Delhi classrooms to Chartered Accountancy firms, from legislative halls to shaping party strategy, his trajectory underscores the importance of preparation, resilience, and vision in public life.
As India celebrates both his personal and professional milestones, the upcoming addition to his family and his continued influence in politics, Chadha stands as a reminder that education, ambition, and dedication remain the bedrock of transformative leadership.
