About IELTS exam
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is specifically designed to assess the language proficiency of candidates who aim to study or work in environments where English is the primary mode of communication.
IELTS evaluates all four key language skills—listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Among these, the speaking test is conducted face-to-face with a certified examiner, offering a more authentic assessment of verbal communication.
The IELTS test is administered at over 500 international centers worldwide, available four times a month. After completing the test, candidates receive a score on a scale of 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest possible score and 1 the lowest.
IELTS is one of the most widely accepted international language proficiency tests, with a diverse range of candidates from various backgrounds. In fact, over three million candidates globally took the IELTS test last year alone.
The IELTS test is jointly owned by IDP: IELTS Australia, the British Council, and Cambridge English Language Assessment, ensuring its credibility and global recognition.
Benefiting from the shared expertise of these three global partners, IELTS combines the world-renowned language and research expertise of Cambridge ESOL and the test delivery, security and examination expertise of the British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia.
IELTS TEST STRUCTURE
The IELTS test has four parts
Listening, reading and writing are completed in one sitting. The speaking test may be taken on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.
There are two test formats - academic and general training. Of the four skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) that are tested, listening and speaking sections are same in both the formats, whereas reading and writing sections are different.
The academic module is for the students, who aspire to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate programme. Students are offered unconditional admissions to desired courses on the basis of their test results.
IELTS SCORE
