Assam Assembly Elections Constituency Map

The Election Commission of India has announced that elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The announcement sets the stage for a closely watched contest between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition Indian National Congress. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the NDA are seeking another term in office, while the Congress-led opposition hopes to return to power in the northeastern state.

The ruling alliance currently holds a majority in the assembly, with the BJP having 64 MLAs, while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have nine members and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) seven. The opposition benches are led by the Congress with 26 legislators, followed by the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15 members, along with representation from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and an Independent MLA.

As campaigning intensifies, several long-standing political and social issues are expected to dominate the election narrative. These include immigration and infiltration concerns linked to the Assam Accord, debates around the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the state government’s eviction drives against alleged encroachers, and questions over welfare schemes, employment and development initiatives undertaken by the state government.

Assam’s electoral history in recent years highlights the growing influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state’s politics. In the 2016 assembly elections, the BJP achieved a significant breakthrough by winning 60 seats and ending the long rule of the Indian National Congress, which secured 26 seats. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) won 13 seats in that election. Voter participation remained high, with an 83.9 per cent turnout as nearly 2 crore people exercised their franchise across the state’s 126 constituencies.

As the next election approaches, political parties have intensified preparations and outreach programmes. The state unit of the BJP recently launched the “Jan Ashirwad Yatra” campaign to connect with voters ahead of the polls.

Development initiatives, welfare schemes for women and employment drives in government departments are expected to be highlighted by the ruling alliance, while opposition parties plan to question the distribution of benefits and the broader impact of these policies. The death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in 2025 and demands for justice in the case have also emerged as a political talking point during the campaign.
