Odisha: ECI postpones Patkura assembly election in the aftermath of cyclone Fani

BHUBANESWAR: The Election Commission of India on Monday postponed election to the Patkura assembly constituency in view of the devastation caused to the coastal districts by cyclone Fani. Election to the constituency was scheduled on May 19.


An official statement issued by the chief electoral officer, Odisha said, "The ECI has decided to extend the completion of the elections from Patkura assembly constituency for 60 days. The date of poll will be suitably decided after assessing local situation."

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik had on April 30 urged the ECI to postpone the elections in the assembly segment in the wake of cyclone alert. However, the BJP had moved the ECI opposing the CM’s proposal.

Though the four-phase simultaneous election was ended on May 29, polling to Patkura assembly poll was adjourned following death of BJD nominee Bed Prakash Agarwalla. Later the ECI scheduled it on May 19.

Senior leader Bijoy Mohapatra is BJP’s candidate for Patkura while the Congress has fielded Jayant Kumar Mohanty from the seat. After death of Bed Prakash, the BJD has roped in his wife Sabitri as its candidate.
