Did you know that
Basusree cinema houses an unmatched treasure from the movie world in Bengal? The theatre owns an ash carbon projector made in 1947, which was used for the screening of
Satyajit Ray’s ‘
Pather Panchali
’.
The projector was also used to screen quite a few other classics and now regularly travels to exhibitions on cinema’s forgotten treasures. A few years back, it was showcased at a prestigious event where the insignia of the Knight of the Legion of Honour was conferred on
Soumitra Chatterjee who passed away on November 15, 2020.
Since the projector was used for the screening of Ray’s ‘Apur Sansar’ as well, which was
Soumitra Chatterjee’s debut film the late actor had happily posed in front of it.
Pather Panchali’ (A Song of the Little Road) marked
Satyajit Ray’s debut as a director. This masterpiece from Ray is a social drama inspired by a famous novel of the same name by
Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay.
