Smriti Biswas Narang passed away peacefully at her home, situated on Nashik Road. She was 100. Smriti was known for her appearances in Hindi and Bengali films and her funeral, following Christian traditions, took place on July 4, Thursday, at 10 a.m.
Smriti, who had previously lived in Mumbai with substantial wealth, relocated to Nashik 28 years ago to reside with her sister, a Christian missionary. Before passing away, Smriti lived in poverty. She is survived by her two sons, Rajeev and Satyajeet.
Spanning over three decades from the 1930s to the 1960s, Smriti starred in numerous successful films such as 'Nek Dil', 'Aparajita', and 'Modern Girl', making significant contributions to the film industry.
Smriti began her acting career at age 10 in the Bengali film 'Sandhya'. She later starred in films like 'Dwanda' and 'Neel Akasher Neechey', produced in Kolkata. Over her career, she appeared in many Hindi, Marathi, and Bengali films, working with famous directors like Guru Dutt, V. Shantaram, Mrinal Sen, Bimal Roy, B.R. Chopra, and Raj Kapoor. She acted alongside stars such as Dev Anand and Kishore Kumar. Smriti retired from acting after marrying film director S.D. Narang in 1960.
After moving to Bombay, Smriti starred in many important films in the 1950s. She appeared in 'Pehla Admi by Bimal Roy', 'Bhaagam Bhaag' by A.R. Kardar with Kishore Kumar, 'Baap Re Baap' by Bhagwan Dada, 'Humsafar' by A.N. Bannerjee with Dev Anand, 'Sailaab' by Guru Dutt with Geeta Bali, 'Teen Batti Aur Chaar Raasta' by V. Shantaram, 'Jagte Raho' produced by Raj Kapoor, 'Chandni Chowk' by B.R. Chopra with Meena Kumari, and made a guest appearance in 'Dilli ka Thug' by S.D. Narang.
