The legendary actor while giving his speech at the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival opening ceremony spoke highly about Bengal and it’s rich heritage. The veteran actor also spoke fluently in Bengali and thanked all for the immense love he has received from Kolkata over the years.
He expressed his gratitude towards Kolkata for giving him the first job of his life. In his speech, Amitabh Bachchan said, "I salute you Kolkata for giving me my first job. I salute you Kolkata for giving
Jaya her first film in Mahanagar directed by
Satyajit Ray but most of all, I salute you for your artistic temperament that embraces of the plurality and equality. This is what makes Bengal so special. Apnara shobai bhalo thakben."
While giving his speech the veteran actor also spoke extensively about the history of censorship in Indian cinema, and said, “Even now, I’m sure my colleagues on stage would agree, questions are being raised on civil liberties and freedom of expression.”
Amitabh Bachchan, who started his career as an executive of a British managing agency in Kolkata, has often introduced himself as the 'son-in-law' of Bengal because of his marriage to
Jaya Bhaduri. He has also shot quite a few films such as ‘Do Anjaane’, ‘Yaarana’, ‘The Last Lear’ and ‘Piku’ in Kolkata.
During his early days of struggle before he even stepped into the showbiz he used to live in a Kolkata mess while working for a British company. Do you know how much he used earn during those days? You won’t believe it. The remuneration was between Rs 4-5 per day. Yes, you read it right. Since most of the money was spend on paying the rent and travel Amitabh couldn’t save enough money for food. So, he used to buy the famous Bengali street snack jhaal muri.
