Aparna Sen has a quiet birthday

It is Aparna Sen’s birthday, but the director has no special plans today. “I have no plans on my

birthday

this year as one of my relatives is extremely unwell. We are not in a mood to celebrate as we are all concerned about his health. That apart, I am busy with the promotions of my film, Ghawre Baire Aaj,” said the director. The director’s last Bengali film was Arshinagar, which released in December 2015. In 2017, she directed Sonata, which was bilingual film (English and Hindi).

Ghawre Baire Aaj is

inspired

by Rabindranath Tagore's novel Ghare Bairey (Home and the World), and is a contemporary retelling of the triangular love story involving Tagore’s characters Nikhilesh, Sandeep and Bimala. It is as much a story of passionate romance as it is of clashing ideologies in the present times and the way these clashes affect love and friendship.

“Tagore's Ghare Bairey is about a triangular love story featuring three central characters —Nikhilesh, Bimala and Sandip — set in the turbulent times of pre-Independent India. It is about how the interpersonal relationships at home are affected by what is happening in the outside world. My Ghare Bairey is also about the triangular passionate relationship between Nikhilesh, Bimala and Sandip,” said the director.

Does the film focuses on political issues too? “In Tagore’s Ghare Bairey there were political issues of that time. Similarly, my film is set against the turbulent political backdrop of the India of today. The film is dedicated to the memory of Gauri Lankesh, MM Kalburgi, Govind Pansare and Shujaat Bukhari,” said Aparna.
