The biggest festival of Bengal, Durga Puja is took place amidst state-wide protests over RG Kar rape-murder incident. On one hand, Bengal prayed to the Goddess Durga for justice for the victim and her family. On the other hand, people extended their support to the doctors who began their activity of ‘fast unto death’ to have their demands met. Three Bengali films released in theatres amidst this scenario, and to everyone’s surprise – all of them are doing quite well in the Box Office.
The three Bengali films that released in theatres as Puja releases this year are – Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy’s ‘Bohurupi’, Srijit Mukherji’s ‘Tekka’ and Pathikrit Basu’s ‘Shastri’.
As per the Box Office collection numbers, ‘Bohurupi’ is leading the chart. According to Sacnilk, the Shibu-Nandita directorial is close to earning 5 crores worldwide after a week of its theatrical run. The Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Koushani Mukherjee and Shiboprosad Mukherjee starrer film has so far churned 4.26 crores in the Bengal BO alone, and it still is pulling audience to the theatres and expecting to increase the numbers by the end of this week.
‘Tekka’, helmed by Srijit Mukherji, has held the second position with a Box Office income of almost 3 crores worldwide. As per Sacnilk, in Bengal alone, the Dev, Rukmini Maitra and Swastika Mukherjee starrer thriller has managed to collect 2.59 crores. Srijit has been delivering commercially successful movies during Durga Puja for over a decade now. This year isn’t an exception for the ace filmmaker of Tollywood and he again has managed to hit the bull’s eye with ‘Tekka’.
On the other hand, ‘Shastri’, the film directed by ‘Dabaru’ fame Pathikrit Basu is a bit away from touching the BO income of 1 crore worldwide. In the Bengal Box Office, the Mithun Chakraborty starrer film has earned over 67 lakhs. Apart from Mithun Chakraborty, ‘Shastri’ stars Debasree Roy, Soham Chakraborty, Saswata Chatterjee, Sauraseni Maitra, Rajatava Dutta, Anirban Chakrabarti, Kaushik Sen and others.
