Bengali romantic comedies we don’t get tired of watching

We live for the love and laughs! That’s what these films aim at, which in turn introduces a fresh touch in the cinematic treatment if not novelty in the ideas. You may find some of these formulaic but you would also find yourself in these characters and stories. As escapist as some of these characters might appear, they tug at our hearts and never grow stale even after watching them time and again. Scroll down to have a look at these Bengali romantic comedies which you can’t just miss out!

2/11

Mouchak

This was the period when Uttam Kumar was intentionally passing on the baton to younger generation. But in ‘Mouchak’ despite a handsome Ranjit Mullick catches the limelight, it's still Uttam Kumar who creates a larger impression. The legendary actor taught how to make the audiences laugh even with simple performance. It’s one of the rare occasions when the famous comic trio of Robi-Anup-&-Chinmoy acted together and Chinmoy perhaps overshadowed the other two. Arabinda Mukherjee, who already gave the other masterpiece 'Dhanni Meye' (1971), once again showed his mastery over this comedy genre.

3/11

Saare Chuattor

This superhit comedy directed by Nirmal Dey had legendary actors like Tulsi Chakraborty, Molina Devi, Bhanu, Jahar and to add to the list the most loved couple of Bengali cinema, Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. The story revolves around a boarding house. The boarders are quite friendly apart from an elderly boarder known as Rajanibabu. The comic turn of incidents start as soon as a boarder called Rampriti (Uttam Kumar) and the only woman boarder (Suchitra) fall in love with each other. How these events take place with so much comedy is a treat for every movie lover.

4/11

Sriman Prithwiraj

Sriman Prithwiraj is a comic take on child marriage. With a cult following, Ayan Banerjee and Mahua Roychoudhury as the child-couple are still talked about in every Bengali adda. The free-flowing comedy flick gave some amazingly rendered traditional Bengali romantic tracks. It’s punctuated by a set of stand-offs the young boy faces, mostly with unwanted results for those who are against him. The Bengali classic is a beautiful pre-adolescent love saga.

5/11

Chhadmabeshi

Chhadmabeshi, the evergreen Bengali classic, with its awesome comedy situations would make you watch the film any day. This film will never get old for the Bengali movie lovers. It’s a romantic comedy flick which still attracts us. Uttam Kumar at his innocent best and Madhabi Mukherjee’s cuteness mesmerizes everyone. The film was remade in Hindi by Hrishikesh Mukherjee named ‘Chupke Chupke’ and it also became a Box Office hit. Dharmendra was seen in Uttam Kumar’s role in this version. Madhabi Mukherjee’s part was portrayed by Sharmila Tagore.

6/11

Ghare And Baire

The crackling chemistry between Jisshu Sengupta and Koel Mallick in this movie is eye-popping. ‘Ghare And Baire’ deals with so many subjects like love, passion, friendship, separation, twist and comedy. In the film, Amit, a band musician, destroys his bohemian dreams of making music in Kolkata and steps into the corporate slavery in Mumbai. He hopes one day he would be able to express his feelings for his best friend Labanya. But he suffers a heartbreak when an unconventional Labanya under tremendous family pressure agrees to a traditional arranged marriage to a ‘Probashi Bangali’.

7/11

Ogo Bodhu Sundari

It was the last film of Uttam Kumar. Directed by Salil Dutta, ‘Ogo bodhu sundari’ released after the Bengali Matinee idol’s demise. The film starts with his easy charm that makes us laugh out loud. As his quarrelsome wife, Sumitra too holds the narrative strong. However, it’s Mousumi Chatterjee as Sabitri steals the show. Ranjit Mullick, Haradhan Banerjee, and Santosh Dutta all have shined in their respective roles. Dialogues from this film are memorable, such as "ami jate matal, tale thik"(i am drunk, but careful of my steps).

8/11

Baksho Badal

This 1970 romantic comedy stars Soumitra Chatterjee and Aparna Sen in the lead. Directed by Nityananda Dutta, the story follows two passengers on a train journey whose luggage get exchanged. Very few people know the screenplay of Baksho Bodol is by Satyajit Ray. Soumitra here plays a psychiatrist and when he finds the luggage of the happy-go-lucky girl Aparna he gets interested. The simple confession of his love for her and the process to win her heart is a hilarious story. It not only makes you laugh out loud but also ensures you don’t get even a single moment without laugh.

9/11

Cross Connection

Director Abhijit Guha and Sudheshna Roy churned out an engaging comedy focusing on the follies of youths, their unmatched egos, and passions with a blend of essential travel goals in a hectic life. ‘Cross Connection’ promised a refreshing genre of comedy giving an adult touch to the narrative never being overemphasized. The audience can even relate to the holiday sequence at the beaches of Mandarmani. We all look for the loop holes in our daily life to breathe a fresh air and the way ‘Cross Connection’s narrative introduces the sudden holiday trip, it’s quite relatable.

10/11

Teen Yaari Kotha

Having been shelved for more than five years, the release of ‘Teen Yaari Katha’ in 2012 raised everyone's expectations very high but it proved to be a cakewalk for director duo Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha. It’s an out and out comedy film with an emotional touch. The best thing is that it keeps incorporating the harsh reality checks and real-life struggles of the young generation. Three suburban young lads Shyamal, Antu, and Bilu are in search of love and welcome their daily obstacles with a big smile. Even if they miss out on everything in the real world, the trio has their friendship to fall back on.

11/11

Bibaho Diaries

What happens to a couple before marriage and how they eventually change post marriage is what this laugh riot tries to focus on. This Mainak Bhaumik directed romantic-comedy is surely a relatable one. Story wise there’s nothing new. It’s a typical story of a couple who after their love marriage get the reality check, they realize how the romantic equations keep changing when they become husband and wife as the responsibilities of a married life throws a whole new challenge. Instead of an over exposed subject, the film never looks boring due to the refreshing screenplay (particularly in the first half), the funny witty dialogues and the wonderful performances by the lead actors Ritwick Chakraborty and Sohini Sarkar.
