Buddhadeb Dasgupta passes away

Stalwart

director Buddhadeb Dasgupta breathed his last on Thursday. He was 77. The National-Award winner filmmaker was suffering from kidney-related ailment.

According to his family members, Buddhadeb dasgupta passed away in his sleep. “He used to go for dialysis twice a week. On Thursday, he was due for his dialysis. He has a little bit of pre-dialysis discomfort, but nothing major. He died in his sleep,”said one of the family members.


His death cast a shadow over the film industry. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee issued a condolence note.


Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s films, Uttara, Bagh Bahadur, charachar, Mando Meyer Upakhyan, Kalpurush and several others, brought him global accolades. From Venice, Berlin and Locarno Film Festival to National Award in India -- he received recognition from all over the world.

PM Modi also expressed grief over the filmmaker's demise and shared on Twitter, "Anguished by the demise of Shri Buddhadeb Dasgupta. His diverse works struck a chord with all sections of society. He was also an eminent thinker and poet. My thoughts are with his family and several admirers in this time of grief. Om Shanti."
