Filming Porichoy was an incredible experience: Promita Bhowmik

Porichoy, a Bengali drama movie, is scheduled to release on YouTube on September 17. Directed by filmmaker, writer and poet, Promita Bhowmik, Porichoy emphasises on the identity crisis that women suffer from in the Indian Subcontinent irrespective of the background they come from. The movie, stars Sudipta Chakraborty and Koneenica Bandyopadhyay.

“Porichoy gave me an opportunity to work with two powerful actresses like Sudipta Chakraborty and Koneenica Bandopadhyay. It was an incredible experience. I think identity does not depend on profession or social stigma of patriarchy. Self-respect, self-dependence (economically and socially) and self-confidence are essential for every woman in our society. Identity is a combination of all these components of life,” said director Promita Bhowmik.
The story revolves around two former college batchmates Anuradha, a homemaker and Shreya, a sex worker. The two batchmates, who now lead two very different lives, explore each others’ lives to understand what ‘self-identity’ could possibly mean for a woman in today’s Indian society.

According to the director, the 15-minute movie releasing on a video sharing platform will ensure better reach for a movie with such a gripping plot.
Miami Independent Film Festival, Berlin Flash film Festival, Toronto International Women Film festival, Pune Short Film Festival, Golden Short Film Festival and New York Flash Film Festival, Sweden Film Awards and New Indie Film Festival of London are some of the international film festivals that the movie has been chosen for.

Besides this, the movie has also been awarded at the Honorable mention award, Madras Independent Film festival, Istanbul Film awards and International Golden Mirror film Festival.
