Five reasons to watch Nandita-Shiboprosad’s latest ‘Gotro’

Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee are known for delivering content-rich films which have made a mark not only within the Bengali diaspora but across India. After the huge success of their last offering ‘Konttho’, the filmmaker duo, whose combination today is a force to reckon with at Bengali box office, are back with their latest ‘Gotro’. The story sees an elderly woman striking a unique bond with an ex-convict who is entrusted with taking care of her, in this heartwarming story of love, faith, and redemption. It’s a poignant take on a mother-son relationship with a message of strong communal harmony.

Ahead of the film’s release this Friday, August 23, here we take a look at five reasons that make ‘Gotro’ a must-watch.

A message on communal harmony, brotherhood

‘Gotro’ aims to spread the word that we must not be bound by the shackles of caste system. All religions teach humanity and inclusivity. The story revolves around searching for the true identity of a human being. Is it their religion or caste, or is it humanity? In these politically charged times, this movie is sure to raise very pertinent questions. Speaking about the film Shiboprosad Mukherjee said, “It will be another moving human story just like our other films, but I cannot tell anything more about the film. We are releasing on Janmasthami, August 23, since there is a strong connection with the birthday of Lord Krishna.”

The charismatic director duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee

Trust filmmaker duo Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee to always weave their magic and treat the audience with something extraordinary. And this stands true not only for their movies but also for the music of the films. Their upcoming film Gotro, post the huge success of ‘Konttho’, is certainly no different. Gotro is based on a social issue and tries to remind us of the importance of humanity over religion through a heart-warming story. After the 2011 film Icche, this is Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee's second film focusing on the mother-son relationship. Interestingly, the directors, who are known to deliver one film a year, after 8 years have broken their own rule and Gotro will be their second film this year.

The story has piqued curiosity

The story is centered on Mukti Debi played by Anashua Majumdar who is a devotee of Lord Radha Krishna while her house is named Gobinda Dhaam. Her only son leaves abroad. However, she has her house filled with interesting people who are close to her. Jhuma (Manali Manisha Dey) is one such member whom Mukti Debi considers as her daughter. Then there is his son’s friend, a priest in charge of the temple in her house. There is one more member who is close to Mukti Debi’s heart. He is Tariq Ali played by Nigel Akkara whom she sees almost like her son for his loving and caring nature. The unique bonding between Mukti Debi and Tariq Ali is the main focus of the film. Despite hailing from a different religious background, they share an emotional bonding.

Music that touches hearts

The soundtracks of Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee’s upcoming ‘Gotro’ bring fresh air to Bengali film music. Be it the melodious ‘Maa’, ‘Neel Digante’, the folk dance number ‘Rangabati’ or the Bengali adaptation of a Gujarati bhajan – it promises to treat the audience with some extraordinary musical experience. The soulful renditions from Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal are already topping the music charts raising the expectation bar high for the film.

Watch out for another powerful performance from Anashua Majumdar

Watch out for some captivating performances as ‘Gotro’ hits the theatres on August 23. After the fascinating success of Pritha Chakraborty’s ‘Mukherjee Dar Bou’, Anashua Majumdar is back in yet another film by Windows Production. She essays the central character of Mukti Devi in this Nandita Roy and Shiboprosad Mukherjee directorial. Mukti Devi is a devotee of Lord Radha Krishna while her house is named Gobinda Dhaam. Her only son leaves abroad. However, she has her house filled with interesting people who are close to her.

Not only Anashua, but we will also get a fresh pair in Tollywood with ‘Gotro’. Nigel Akkara and Manali Manisha Dey’s on-screen chemistry has already been lapped up. Plus, we have an acting powerhouse like Kharaj Mukherjee along with the supremely talented singer-actor Shaheb Chatterjee.
