Tollywood gears up for a Durga Puja movie marathon

The reopening of cinema halls in Bengal has somehow reinstalled hope in Tollywood for the upcoming festive season, seen as one of the most lucrative periods for film business. All eyes will be on some of the most anticipated Bengali films like Dev’s sports period drama ‘Golondaaj’, Saswata Chatterjee’s children’s fantasy drama ‘Hobu Chandra Raja Gobu Chandra Mantri’, Jeet and Mimi Chakraborty’s action thriller ‘Baazi’ and Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s sci-fi ‘Bony’. Although ‘Hobuchandra’ won’t be releasing in theatres, instead it will have a television release during Puja, still, it’s worth a watch. This is surely a huge surprise from Dev. The rise in footfall at cinema halls showing Bengali films with fresh content has raised the expectation bar for the stakeholders in Tollywood.

‘Golondaaj’

The Dhrubo Banerjee-directed sports drama, starring Dev in the lead, is inspired by the life of the father of Indian football Nagendra Prasad Sarbadhikari. Dev will be seen as the radical, open-minded and prolific athlete who was responsible for introducing the concept of football among the people of India. In this period film, Nagendra will be seen as a man who challenges the existing social structure and will go on to become a true leader on the field. It also stars Ishaa Saha, Anirban Bhattacharya, Indrashish Ray and others in key roles. The release date is October 10.

‘Baazi’

In Anshuman Pratyush’s ‘Baazi’, Jeet and Mimi Chakraborty have paired up for the first time. It’s the Bengali remake of the Telugu hit ‘Nannaku Prematho. The action thriller follows a twisted story of love and revenge. As we have already seen in the teaser, Jeet seems to be in a race against time while his mission is connected to his father’s treatment and safety. The plot revolves around Aditya, son of London-based Amulya Mukherjee, who finds out that his father is suffering from pancreatic cancer and he lost his wealth to a cunning man and friend Krishna Kumar Bardhan. Aditya decides to ruin him in 30 days. Will Operation Zero succeed? That’s what forms the crux of the story. The Action flick will also release on October 10.

'Bony'

Parambrata Chattopadhyay’s next directorial, the much-talked-about science-fiction thriller ‘Bony’ will also have its theatrical release this Durga Puja. Starring Koel Mallick, Anjan Dutt and Parambrata himself in the lead, the film is based on Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s novel by the same name. The story of ‘Bony’ revolves around a Bengali couple settled in Italy with their mysterious newborn baby, an American-born Bangladeshi scientist and a middle-class Bengali clerk. The scientist is on a hunt for the boy with mysterious superpower while the Bengali clerk’s life takes a drastic turn after he finds a dysfunctional robot. Music for the film has been composed by Anupam Roy. Parambrata and Koel play the couple settled in Milan.

'FIR'

Directed by Joydeep Mukherjee and starring Bonny Sengupta, Ankush, Ritabhari Chakraborty, Priyanka Bhattacharjee, Falaque Rashid Roy in the lead, the crime thriller is loaded with suspense, thrill and a lot of drama. While Falaque plays a small-town bar dancer and Bonny’s love interest, both Bonny and Ankush will be seen as police officers in the film, and Ritabhari as a doctor and Ankush’s love interest. Ritabhari’s character helps Ankush and Bonny with forensic reports to solve a case. This one will be up against a serious challenge, given the big canvas of 'Golondaaj' and 'Baazi's USP being the Jeet-Mimi chemistry, and then there's is Parambrata's 'Bony'.

'Hobu Chandra Raja Gobu Chandra Mantri'

Although this Aniket Chattopadhyay directorial was expected to release in theatres, now we know it will release on a private TV channel on October 10. This is surely a huge decision by Dev, who’s the producer of the film. Since it’s mainly a children’s film he decided not to take risk of bringing them to theatres to watch the film. Instead, it will have its TV premiere on October 10.

It is a fantasy comedy having political overtones and stars Saswata Chatterjee as Hobuchandra Raja, the king of Bombagor, and Kharaj Mukherjee as Gobu Chandra Mantri. The fantasy drama is inspired by Dakshinaranjan Mitra Majumdar’s stories Sarkar Moshaiyer Thole and Hobu Chandra Raja Gobu Chandra Mantri. The plot revolves around Hobu Chandra Raja who is completely dependent on his minister Gobu Chandra. However, the people of Bombagor are quite happy as peace and happiness are all around because of the equal treatment by the rulers. In the film, Arpita Chatterjee will be seen as Kushumkoli, the queen of Hobu Chandra Raja.

Aniket Chattopadhyay’s children’s fantasy drama is creating much hype
