Got my biggest gift right before Christmas: Paoli

Got my biggest gift right before Christmas: Paoli
The actor talks about her Christmas plans, her award-winning film Chhaad and a lot more. Read on...
Congratulations! Your film Chhaad directed by Indrani got a Special Jury Award in the Indian Language Films Category at KIFF. How does it feel?
Oh, it feels great! It came as such a surprise. When I was on the stage, I actually thought that I was there to felicitate or present an award but instead I received the best gift that Santa had in store for me! I am abundantly glad that NFDC (The National Film Development Corporation of India) which has produced many good independent films around the country, has recognised a plethora of good filmmakers and actors and consistently elevates fantastic projects, had chosen to put their faith in Chhaad, which is also an independent film.
1x1 polls
Considering this is Indrani’s debut film, this recognition means a lot to all of us. We shot the movie during the pandemic and worked exceedingly hard. I am sure the film will resonate deeply with the audience when it is released in the theatres.
Tell us about your character in the film and the story of the film
I play Mitra, the protagonist. She is a teacher and an aspiring writer who wants to write a story or work on a column in a magazine, where she can express herself. It's her inner calling. We experience her struggle amidst the several crises in her life, to find that one space that she can call her own, and this also happens to be the title of the film — Chhaad or the terrace. It suggests a place that represents vastness and openness, where her originality can be expressed. Being a part of a joint family in her in-laws' home, Mitra seldom has time for herself and is always surrounded by people She does not have a space just to herself, which in turn, affects her creativity. Everyone needs their own space, where they are free to do whatever, they want to do. For Mitra, it was the terrace. It was a place where she could explore her thoughts, and her creativity and give a passage to her inner self.

Could you relate to the character Mitra?
I can't emphasise enough how much I relate to the character, as even my favourite spot, be it in my house or the places I go to, is always the terrace. I can connect with the vastitude that intrigued Mitra. As artistes, we always want to work on something new, where we can explore something more. Chhaad provided me with such an opportunity. You rarely find people working on such stories and such characters don't knock on our doors daily. The terrace has always been a very integral part of my life and I can’t express how elated I was when I asked Indrani about what they had decided to name the film and she blurted Chhaad.
Chhaad represents the personal space and freedom of a person. What is freedom to you in real life?
Freedom, for me, is expressing myself through my characters. Mitra's crises as a person or as an artiste and her decisions that empower her are presented in a subtle way in the film, leaving the audience to fall upon the implications in their own way. Even in today's world, in countries like Afghanistan, basic human rights like education are getting snatched from women. Liberty has become a privilege! If Mitra manages to inspire even a single person, to follow through with their dreams, the film will be a big success.
How was your experience of working with Rahul who plays your husband in the film ?
It was simply wonderful. I have worked with Rahul on a lot of projects, so there's a comfort zone. He is a fantastic actor, very enthusiastic. When you work with a good actor, you strive to push yourself higher and level up! With him, this happens a lot.

Tell us about your vacation in the US
It was fantastic! Although I have been travelling across India for work, I travelled abroad after two years! I explored so many places like Chicago, Palo Alto, Bishop, Truckee, San Francisco, and many more. We did some touristy stuff but what was more intriguing were the non-touristy activities that we engaged in like hiking, rock climbing and early morning runs under the clear blue California sky. It was a beautiful experience all-in-all and trust me I am so glad that I could take this much-needed break.
How are you planning to celebrate Christmas this year?
There's no special plan as such. I would rather keep it simple and memorable with my family, primarily my parents and my friends. That's what happiness is for me.
As a child, did you believe in Santa Claus?
Undoubtedly! I always had this belief, that Santa would give me anything that I wished for. Every Christmas morning I used to search under the pillow thoroughly to discover what my Buro Dadu had left for me. Yes, that is what I used to call Santa — Buro Dadu. I remember even having a Santa Claus toy that played the Merry Christmas song. Guess what, it is still one of my most treasured possessions.
Given a chance, what would you want from Santa as a gift?
Santa loves me so much that he has given me the best gift without me asking for it. Chhaad receiving such a prestigious award at KIFF, right before Christmas is my biggest gift. Don't think I could have wished for anything better!
