‘Mahishasur Marddini’ trailer: A brutally honest portrayal of hardships women continue to face today

Ranjan Ghosh’s next film ‘Mahishasur Marddini’ pays a rich tribute to tribute to Maa Durga. With an ensemble cast that includes Rituparna Sengupta, Saswata Chatterjee, Parambrata Chattopadhyay and Shaheb Bhattacherjee in key roles, the hard-hitting is in fact a tribute to the hardships women continue to face even today and ironically the plot is set against a festival that worships a powerful female form.

The official trailer of the film is out now and it’s every bit intriguing giving a sneak peek into the twisted narrative. The film has parallel storylines that revolve around the gangrape and murder of a young girl a night before Durga Puja commences, and the discovery of an infant girl abandoned in a garbage bin while the preparations for the festival continue in the backdrop.

This film, according to Ranjan, is set to be a brutally honest portrayal of the struggles faced by women in society. ‘Mahishasur Marddini’ also stars Sritama Dey, Aryuun Ghosh, Arunima Halder, Abhyuday Dey, Purbasha Mal, Koushik Kar, and Poulomi Das in other important roles.
“Our story begins with the gang-rape and murder of a ten-year-old deaf-mute destitute girl a night before Durga puja is scheduled to begin in Kolkata. She happened to live through her days and nights at the local Hindu crematorium and Muslim graveyard. The storyline then shifts to the house of a landlady and her four college-going tenants who are busy with last-minute festival preparations. Through the night they receive a few visitors, some planned, some unplanned. The incidents that unfold thereafter showcase the trials and tribulations faced by women all over. The characters too have their moment of catharsis as they realize that a girl-child or a woman in distress is nothing short of humanity in peril. Mahishasur Marddini is our letter of apology to women for the wrongs done to her through ages that continue even to this day,” the director had earlier shared while speaking about main essence of his film.
