Legendary Bengali filmmaker Tarun Majumdar, who became a stalwart in Indian cinema for his iconic films revolving around heartwarming stories based on the life and struggles of middle-class families, breathed his last at a Kolkata hospital on Monday. He was 92.
The renowned director was undergoing treatment for old age-related ailments at the SSKM hospital for the past few days. His condition was improving but it again deteriorated yesterday, and doctors decided to put him on ventilation support.
Born on 8 January 1931 in the Bengal Presidency of British India, the maveric filmmaker made his directorial debut joining hands with Sachin Mukherji and Dilip Mukherji, under the screen name Yatrik, in the 1959 Bengali film 'Chaowa Pawa'.
Tarun Majumdar won four National Film Awards for cult classics Kancher Swargo, Nimantran, Ganadevata and Aranya Aamar. He received Padma Shri in 1990 for his extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema.
His films such Smriti Tuku Thak (1960), Palatak (1963), Kuheli (1971), Shriman Prithviraj (1972), Balika Badhu (1976), Ganadevata (1978) and Dadar Kirti (1980) are still being watched by every Bengali cine lovers. So many noted actors including Moushumi Chatterjee, Mahua Roychoudhury, Ayan Banerjee and Tapas Paul made their silver screen debut in Tarun Majumdar's films.
