There’s something about Kolkata and rock music—it’s like that friend who knows all the words to classic rock anthems and has impeccable taste in underground bangers. Last Saturday, Republic of Rock 2024 turned that camaraderie into a raucous celebration, blending generations of rock heads, from dads in their vintage band tees head banging with their kids, to couples grooving in the cool rock breeze.
The amps roared, the lights flashed, and rock season was officially underway, as Fossils shook the crowd with its music from Bishakto Manush to Hansnuhana, while Lakkhichhara got everyone singing along to Mohiner Ghoraguli’s Prithibi Ta Naki Chhoto Hote Hote to their originals like Kemon Acho Sohor. The night ended with Thaikkudam Bridge electrifying the music lovers with Navarasam and Namah.

Rock is growing in India” “The scene of rock in India is growing, and artists are able to reach their target audience better now,” said Ashok Betty Nelson from Thaikkudam Bridge. “I remember when we had to go to friends' places just to borrow discs and cassettes. Now, all one needs is the wisdom to appreciate what’s out there. The market is expanding, and in a few years, I believe rock music could gradually compete with film music.” While

Spotlight on rising stars Republic of Rock 2024 wasn’t just about big names. Opening acts like Zombie Cage Control and Perpetual burst onto the scene with a raw energy that set the tone for the night. Their soundscapes left a lasting impact, reminding everyone that the future of rock in India is just as promising as its past.
“Kolkata is always special and this is one of the biggest gigs for us in Kolkata since we’ve only played a few concerts here. What is interesting is that there’s no language barrier. We still remember playing at Jadavpur University, thousands of people sang along in Malayalam. It gave us goosebumps-music truly connects us all,”
