Sailen De’s short film ‘SHE’ celebrates womanhood challenging the social stigma with the decision to give birth to a new life and throttle the antagonism of
abortion
. Mousumi Dalal and Anindita Sarkar excel in their characters playing the two female leads in this short film.
The narrative sees
Mira Nair (Anindita Sarkar), an independent woman in her late twenties, is in a live-in relationship with her boyfriend. When she realizes that she is pregnant and her live-in partner is against it, she chooses to stand by the new life forming within her, even at the cost of her relationship with her boyfriend.
Meanwhile, a young gynecologist Anita Braganza (Mousumi Dalal), despite her years of rigorous training was left unsettled when she held Mira's MTP form in her hand. Interestingly, she is also a single mother’s child. Her mother Rita Braganza once wanted to abort to escape the jeers but the sight of new life breathing inside her womb strengthened her resolve to confront the society protecting her child. Anita now can relate to her stance against abortion as she recalls her mother's decision to bring her to life despite all odds.
‘SHE’ thus signifies the creation and nurture of life exorcising the evils of abortion in our society. The short film has already travelled a number of
international
film festivals including Goa Film festival last year and the Delhi Film Fest this year.
