Saptaswa Basu’s film Doctor Bakshi introduces sci-fi elements in a medical thriller. Basu’s last film was also a medical thriller titled Pratidwandi. Considering the widespread love and appreciation audiences harbour for thrillers, Basu and his team considered a spin-off of Pratidwandi, which will explore further the character of the main lead, Doctor Bakshi. The film stars Parambrata Chatterjee, Subhashree Ganguly and Bonny Sengupta in lead roles.

“It is for the first time that Bengali audiences will get to watch a spin-off. Pratidwandi was appreciated by the audience and the character of Doctor Bakshi was also well-received. So, we decided to develop a script based on the character. We designed a completely new storyline and kept a subtle connection to Pratidwandi. Both the films work with elements of a thriller,” said Basu.
The director, who had earlier made films like Network and Jatugriha, believes that Bengali viewers are open to new content. “Doctor Bakshi is made in a larger format with greater production value. We have added sci-fi elements to it and that has taken it to a completely new genre,” said Basu.
As for the actors, the director couldn’t have cast a better ensemble. Basu feels Parambrata fits the part of a witty doctor and no one but Subhashree could fit the role of a writer who gets trapped in a murder mystery. And Bonny as the antagonist could be a refreshing choice.
