Saroj Khan's energy on the sets was infectious: Arindam Sil

I got an opportunity to work with Saroj Khan during the making of

Byomkesh Pawrbo

. She choreographed a majlishi song, Rang Raisiya Re, sung by Ujjayini and composed by Bickram Ghosh, which was picturised on Sayantika Banerjee. Sayantika played a courtesan in the film. It was Bickram’s idea to rope in Saroj Khan, as the song had Bhojpuri influences and was set in Bowbazar, which was a happening place in the 1940s. I was on cloud nine when Sarojji agreed to choreograph the song. But she had a condition. She wanted me to send her the song, once recorded, along a few clippings of Sayantika’s dance moves as she needed to know the situation of the song, genre of the movie, the director's vision and the artist's style of dancing before she choreographed it. Sarojji was so professional that she choreographed the song first and sent it to me for my approvals and changes so that there were no problems on the day of shooting. I was surprised to see a famous choreographer like her taking so much interest in just one song! She was there all through the night when we shot the song and the way she guided Sayantika was incredible. She was 67-68, but her energy on the sets was infectious. Sarojji was very strict and was a perfectionist, but needless to say she was a darling to work with. May her soul rest in peace.
