The period drama revolves around two renowned personalities of Bengali cultural universe - Mahanayak Uttam Kumar and

Birendra Krishna Bhadra

. Jisshu Sengupta and Subhasish Mukherjee are playing these two iconic characters respectively.

Elaborating on his favourite scene in the film, Jisshu has revealed: “There is a particular scene where Mahanayak meets Bhadra and hugs him tight. That one was no doubt an emotional scene for both of us.” Mahalaya will hit the theatres on March 1.

Bankrolled by Prosenjit Chatterjee’s home production Nideas, The story revolves around the public outrage in 1976 following Akashvani Kolkata’s controversial replacement of Birendra Krishna Bhadra with Uttam Kumar for Mahisasurmardini, a program to welcome goddess Durga to earth.

Birendra Krishna’s Sanskrit recitation dedicated to goddess Durga in Mahisasurmardini became so famous and deeply embedded in the Bengali psyche that even 'Mahanayak' Uttam Kumar had to face severe public outrage when replacing the legend.
