This recognition will definitely put Bishnupur gharana in the spotlight: Pt Manilal Nag

Octogenarian Pt

Manilal Nag

was elated after he got the news of receiving the Padma Shri. He is the first musician from the Bishnupur

gharana

to have been conferred this award.

While talking about it, the veteran

sitarist

said, “I want to dedicate this recognition to the

Bishnupur

gharana — Bengal’s very own school of music. Even Rabindranath Tagore was trained in this gharana. This is an important school of

music

that flourished in late 20th and early 21st century. Finally, this gharana has got national recognition and I am very happy about it.”

The musician also wants the younger generation to carry forward his legacy. “Now I am an octogenarian and I wish this school of music was recognised a little earlier. However, this award will definitely put the gharana in the spotlight. I wish the younger generation takes forward the legacy of this school of music.” He said.
