Bratya names Debesh's new play

Theatre group Sansriti is preparing with a new play to celebrate its 25 years of work. Director of the group, Debesh Chattopadhyay, has decided to stage one of the seminal works of Luigi Pirandello, Six Characters In Search Of An Author. “Earlier, Rudraprasad Sengupta has adapted the play in his Natyokarer Sondhane Chhoti Choritro. Based on the original text and his adaptation, we are developing the script.Every day, after rehearsals, our actors are improvising the script and keeping a note on it. That way, the characters are, also in a way, developing a new script,” Debesh told us. Interestingly, Debesh’s old friend, Bratya Basu, who was not in good terms with the Sansriti’s frontman for a while, has named the new play, Kothakar Choritro Kothaye Rekhecho. Besides the actors from the group, Monalisa Chatterjee and Ashim Roychoudhury, will also be in the lead roles.
While talking about the play, the director said, “I usually do theatre for myself and hence, I talk about things I want to talk about. Sometimes it suits the taste of my audience and sometimes it doesn’t. This play is about the truth that we see. While the basic condition of truth was to be multidimensional, of late it became linear. Hence, there is rise in intolerance and tendencies of mob lynching on the social media. I think the text is very relevant in today’s time,” Debesh said.
The play will be premiered on February 24 — the last day of the three-day-long 25^th year celebration of the group. On February 22, there is a panel discussion, Samprotik Bangla Natyo O Cholochitro: Swar O Bhangi. While the topic will be introduced by Sanjoy Mukhopadhyay, Kamaleswar Mukhopadhyay, Indranil Roy Chowdhury, Bratya and Debesh will be in the panel.
