City theatre group presents lockdown plays

The young members of the Whole Nine Yards have started their unique project, #Quarantales, in which they have adapted classics and presented monologues. So far, they have created four pieces: Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya,

Arthur Miller

’s Crucible,

Victor Hugo

’s

Les Misérables

and Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom Of The Opera. While Abhrajit Sen penned the scripts and directed the plays, Ananya Sen, Aryann Bhowmik, Sayantan Banerjee and Tanika Basu have taken part in the series. Each of the actors recorded the piece in her/his mobile camera and then the piece is edited.

“This is an ongoing project. We are also planning to adapt works of Shakespeare, Bertolt Brecht and Tagore. Our objective is to work with classics. After the first release, Uncle Vanya, Alliance Francaise du Bengale came forward for a collaboration,” said Abhrajit.


Each piece appears to be like a short film. “We took help of cinematic tools. Deeptadeep Chakraborty helped me with the editing, sound effects and music for all of the pieces. I adapted the stories and penned the script so that it breaks the monotony of a monologue. I tried to make it socially relevant. All of them are stand alone piece so even if you have not read the text, you will still see the picture,” Abhrajit told us.
