Rangapat’s new is a Greek mythology

Rangapat has been presenting classical plays for years. Now, the group is all set to stage Greek tragedy,

Medea

— a play by

Euripides

. Written in 431 BC, Medea represents a power woman, who stands against all odds in a staunch patriarchal society. She never succumbs under pressure. In fact, she assassinates her nearest ones to achieve her goals. Directed by Tapanjyoti Das, Rangapat's Medea will feature Senjuti Mukhopadhyay in the titular role.

Rangapat has termed it as ‘theatrical extravaganza’. While elaborating the play, director Tapanjyoti wrote on Facebook: “Medea is a princess. She is Sun God

Helios

’s granddaughter and daughter of Aeëtes. She falls in love with Jason — the bravest man in Greece. She loots her own land and sails for foreign territory. She kills her sibling. She dreams to become the empress and gives birth to two sons. But Jason plans to marry

Glauce

, the daughter of king

Creon

of

Corinth

so that he can take over the land. He abandons Medea and their sons. In the rage of love and betrayal, Medea kills Glauce, her father Creon and her own sons…. Besides the Greek mythology, the tale also talks about our sense of displacement. It goes beyond just greed, jealousy, failure, hatred and touches the crisis of racial and religious division.”

While talking about the play, one of the actors, Sukriti Lahari, said, “I am thrilled by the script. This is such an ancient play and yet so relevant. The treatment that Tapanjyoti used is amazing. We are also trying to bring the grandeur of Greek drama on stage. The choreography, light arrangement, costume and other props are lavish.” Sukriti is playing Agathe — the governess of Medea.
