76th Primetime Emmy Awards 2024 Live Updates: 'Shogun', 'Hacks', 'The Bear' and 'Baby Reindeer' win top honours
Hollywood will roll out the red carpet on Sunday (Monday IST) for the 2024 Emmy Awards, television’s most prestigious honours. Historical drama 'Shogun' and culinary comedy 'The Bear' are poised to dominate the night, according to awards pundits.
'Shogun', an extravagant epic set in 17th-century Japan, is the favourite to take home the coveted Best Drama Series award. Having already secured 14 trophies at last weekend's Creative Arts Emmys, the FX series has broken the record for the most Emmy wins by a series in a single season. The show shifted from the limited series category to drama earlier this year as more seasons were developed, putting it in contention for the night’s top prize. The original 1980 'Shogun' miniseries, based on James Clavell’s novel, had also won multiple Emmys, making this new version Emmy royalty from the start.
If 'Shogun' faces any serious competition for Best Drama Series, it may come from 'The Crown', which is in the running for its final season. 'The Crown' is the only previous winner among the nominees, following the conclusion of 'Succession', which had dominated recent years.

Hiroyuki Sanada made history at the Emmy Awards by becoming the second Asian actor to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award for his role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in FX’s “Shōgun.” It was the first Emmy for Sanada, who has been acting for almost 60 years! It was a double whammy, as the drama “Shōgun” too, won Emmy for Best Drama Series.
With this, Shogun has sets a record for most Emmys in a season with 18 awards! Sanada’s achievement come close to Lee Jung-jae’s groundbreaking win in 2022, where Lee became the first Asian actor to win the lead drama actor Emmy for his role in Netflix’s “Squid Game.”

She is the first Latina to win in the category.
"To all the Latinas who are looking at me," she said, "keep believing and vote."
"The Bear" could easily repeat the performance it had at the January strike-delayed Emmys, when it won six including most of the top categories in comedy.

The two Canadian stars of "Schitt's Creek" were among the big winners of the pandemic-era Emmys in 2020.
They went through the night's nominees, taking a shot at "The Bear" being placed in the category.
"In honor of 'The Bear' we will be making no jokes," Eugene Levy said, to laughs.

“Shogun” could win six more trophies, including best drama series, best actor in a drama for Hiroyuki Sanada and best actress in a drama for Anna Sawai.
Though if it fails to win in the biggest categories, “Shogun” may end up feeling like a sports team that has a record-setting regular season then tanks in the playoffs.
Sanada, 63, is a revered veteran Japanese actor whose face may be familiar to most American viewers for films including “The Last Samurai" and “John Wick: Chapter 4” even if his name is not. He's favored by most experts to win best actor over more widely known performers including Gary Oldman, Donald Glover and Idris Elba.
Sawai, 32, even less known in the U.S., is in the same situation, favored over famous names like Jennifer Aniston — who had been considered a frontrunner for “The Morning Show” before the “Shogun” wave took shape — and her castmate Reese Witherspoon.
Either Sanada or Sawai would be the first Japanese actor to win an Emmy.
When “Shogun” led all Emmy nominees with 25 at the announcements in July, many — including The Associated Press — suggested it was at least in part because of the absence of last year's HBO big three: “Succession," “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us.”
