Jolie explained her rationale in an interview with IMDB, admitting, 'There was a time I was going to hire somebody to kill me.' She thought her family and friends would feel less guilty if her death seemed like a result of foul play instead of her taking her own life. In another interview with The Face in 2003, Jolie mentioned that finding a hitman in New York wasn't particularly challenging. She expressed that many young people, unfortunately, contemplate suicide, and she was one of them during that period of her life.

In the midst of these dark thoughts, the hitman she contacted asked for some time to think about her request and promised to call her back in two months. This pause gave Jolie a chance to reconsider, and something changed in her life, leading her to 'stick it out.' Reflecting on these times, Jolie told 60 Minutes in 2011, 'I didn't die young, so I’m very lucky. There are other artists and people who didn’t survive certain things.' She acknowledged that people might imagine she had done the most dangerous and worst things.
